End of March. Today was supposed to be nice. Nothing but grey skies. To heck with that. I've spent the better part of the day trying to figure out a license issue. In short I've decided for sure Icecast really sucks and I'm moving to something else for RiR. I've been listening to The Cure, Monty Python, Lenny Kravitz and REM. And life is good.
I added the link a couple of days back, but my article on Roblimo is on linux.com. You'll find it off to your left. I also decided that this page was getting too long. If you're really bored you can visit my train of thought in the Older News and Stuff section to your left.
Rene Descarte was a drunken fart
I drink, therefore I am.
So this weekend was one of accomplishment. Aside from the fact that I sat around most of Saturday, I managed to get out of the house, enjoy some Thai food and spend money on stuff I'm pretty sure I needed. Finally put a sound card (Ensoniq ESS1371 if you must know) back in Dr. Teeth, my main workstation. While I was at it I also decided I need to compartmentalize my life. I've come close to filling 20 plastic boxes with assorted computer crap around Casa de RIMBoy. At least it is slightly organized now. By the time it was said and done the sun was coming up. I realized I was in trouble... trouble because although I did manage to get a lot of stuff organized, it is still quite a mess.
Anyway, Sunday saw the arrival of Bandix at the RIMBoy.com headquarters. Our mission was to place some sort of unix on one of my older Macs. We choose an LCII and set about installing NetBSD. Overall it was a success and we had two LCII's up and running by the time it was all said and done. Likewise, we took the time to see what we could put into working order in my collection of Macs. I now have quite a few LCII's (stripped from LC's) ready to get unix installed on them. I managed to get a IIci working, albiet it is not in very good shape. I must admit that I'm pretty impressed with NetBSD's installer for the Mac68k hardware. It was a fairly painless install and requires little tweaking once it is installed. Ideally I'll replace Beauregard, a k5-133 running NIS and DHCP server services that also compiles most of my RiR stuff with one of these LCII's. Granted, it will be useless in building RiR, but at least DHCP server and NIS will be on a ultra slim chunk of hardware.
Tonight is bowling night with the grad students. Much fun shall ensue. I just found out I'll be heading to UofI for a Linux Clustering conference. It should be sweet. Much to learn. It'll be a fun trip.
Finally, I know I have too much crap. I really do. But I'm trolling around for an SGI Indy to maybe act as a component in my stereo system. I'll let you know how this project progresses.
Is the sound of spring starting today. It rained all damn day here. It was cold. I'm not happy. That said, Zappa's Strictly Commercial arrived today. I've also released an update to RIMiRadio. Release 0.4 contains an updated Icecast server. (Available in the RIMDistro area).
Morton Downy Jr. passes away (earlier this week). While I was too young to fully appreciate his show (and the fact that it aired so late in STL), Morton is credited along with Phil Donahue for pioneering TV talk shows as we know it. I happened to catch the Larry King show with his family. Pretty amazing that the trash talker admits his fallacies and tried to salvage whatever ever good his 15 min of fame could still provide. IMO it says a lot about the guy and what others in the industry should aspire to. Maybe, just maybe Springer will do what Mort tried to correct in the last 4 years of his life. Nah, as long as the ratings continue and there is a que of psycho neighbor hating elvis empersonators and their pit bulls the show will go on. RIP Mort.
For less depressing news, I'm finally had a computer system congeal into a useable mass. Be on the lookout for a RDTJ to come online soon. That is of course if I can get the mass of CD's in my collection ripped. Willie's latest Milk Cow Blues is not too bad. Nice duets with quite a few people. Also have been spinning Pet Sounds quite a bit. Also newly arrived is The Doors (1st), Songs of Kris Kristofferson, George Jones collection, Marvin Gaye's GH, and Elton John's Yellow Brick Road. Still a few left to get, but the collection is shaping up quite nice. Well, time to stop writing and start getting some work done.
No Doubt's Tragic Kingdom is a poor man's Dark Side of the Moon (Thanks John!)
More CD's in the mail today. I'm content. Dwight (stripped down), Marley, NWA, The Band, Pretenders, Willie (new).
So I know you're asking, what CD's did you get. I thought you'd never ask. (pretty
pretencious of me don't you think?)
Procol Harum's GH
Fab T-Birds GH
Sex Pistols: Never Mind the Bollocks
Mediesk Martin and Wood GH
Best of The Lemonheads
Isaac Hayes: Hot Buttered Soul
Worst of Jefferson Airplane
Keep in mind, these were ranked down futher on my want list. Even better stuff is on its way. Coming to find out the copy of Prince's Gold Experience I picked up last week was a find. It is now out of print. :) Oh yeah, so I'm looking thru the liner on the Lemonhead's cd. One of the dudes in the picture is wearing a Gram Parson shirt. Pretty sweet.
I'm still trying to clean my space. I have a feeling it is hopeless, but I know it can happen. Of course, as soon as I get it all cleaned up someone else is going to call me with stuff that is going to get trashed. I really really really have to say no this time. Oh yeah, Pepe watch is updated. Seems to be a fugitive on the loose.
Enough about my crap. I'm finally working on getting my HPUX X-term I picked up at Dayton up and running. It is an adventure. I'm busy getting things ready for Dayton too. Time to try and get rid of some of this crap. My CD's have still not arrived. Maybe the postman will be nice and drop them in the box today or on Saturday. That would rule. At that point my shelves should officially be full.
Finally, look to your left and you'll see that I've added a new link to the RIMBoy.com list o goodies. Go ahead and take the RIMBoy.com tour.
So anyway, I have a pager on order for those times I need to be paged (people
always be paging me!). I'm still awaiting the arrival of no less than one buttload of
CD's from BMG, but that's all good too. To top things off, I'm going to the Lou (STL)
this weekend. Vintage Vinyl is calling me, but having dropped an insane amount of
money there last time I may end up settling for Cicero's pizza instead.
Because when you take that bus you get
there
