1. Introduction

Welcome to the FAQ of the Nashville Linux User's Group Beer and Pizza social. This FAQ was put together in an attempt to dispel many of the myths, rumors, fallacies, and outright lies of previous B&P's. Quite frankly, they are all true. In the meantime, traffic generated from the annoucement of a B&P has grown to such a volume that this FAQ was put together to help bring list traffic to a more manageable level (read, decrease the noise). With a considerable number of members joining the group each month, someone calling for a B&P, and quite a few people asking: What? or Where at? The time has come for a FAQ. So, here it is.

2. History

NLUG Listserv Admin David Krause was nice enough to post the following:

I was looking through my nlug archives and ran across the following. Perhaps Sean's FAQ could be updated. It appears Joshua Pruitt was the first to suggest a B&P and that Rob was the one who actually called it. David

  • And on that note, here is the revised history. Note, the email addresses have been deleted as they are no longer functional.

    From: Joshua Pruitt
    Subject: [NLUG] Thanks all

#1. I believe that scheduling the meetings for the last Wed. of every month is a pretty solid plan. However, four weeks is a somewhat lengthy interim for those of us just waiting to soak up the wisdom that can irradiate the room, especially involving a topic in which change happens so quickly. (as opposed to something like an Astronomy club, where every month the stars are, well, still there.) I know, some of us have jobs and lives and such, so what I propose is this: One "official" meeting, last Wed. of every month as planned, and then maybe one smaller, more unregulated meeting, say, at Pizza Hut or something, just for fun, in between. Kinda like the two-year rotation of the Olympics... in a way. It's just a thought... I for one have got nothing better to do on a random Tuesday evening or whatever...

  • To which it was followed up with:

I have to say I agree with Josh here. The once-monthly meeting is great, but I have questions and (hopefully) solutions that can't wait that long to be dispersed to the masses. A mid-month gathering would also be good for those of us who can't make the "regularly-scheduled" meetings. Besides, pizza and Linux go together well.

  • And like all things NLUG, was finally proposed with this short, but to the point piece of writing:

    Date: Wed, 5 Nov 1997 10:43:27 -0600 (CST)
    From: Rob Huffstedtler
    Subject: [NLUG] pizza/beer/other

Anyone want to get together next Monday night somewhere, eat some pizza, and talk about Linux?

  • When attempting to recreate this history, the following was originally submitted. It is being left here in the name of useful information as to NLUG's current dining location.

Submitted by Perl Demi-god Rob Huffstedtler:

The first LUG B&P was called by Rob Huffstedtler and took place at Milano's Pizzeria in Green Hills. It was attended by the usual suspects. The group cnsensus was that the service was poor which has resulted in the vast majority of B&Ps over the past two years being held at DaVinci's. Apparently the rest of Nasvhille shared our reaction as Milano's is no longer there.

    3. Why?

Why not? It is a chance for Linux users to get together outside the constrains of a normal meeting. B&P allows everyone to sit around the table and talk about anything. Talk does not have to be Linux related. Think of it as getting together with a bunch of college friends, eating pizza, drinking beer (or other beverage of choice), and just "kickin' it". In other words, like a family BBQ but without Aunt Sally's embarrasing pinching your cheeks reminding you that she changed your diaper.

The B&P allows NLUG members to build relationships with others in a less structured environment. There have been many meetings where after being kicked out of Chili's (because they were closed), the socializing continued in front of the building. The B&P extends this socializing but with better hours.

    4. Rules

Not so much how to act, please act responsibly. Davinci's service has treated NLUG well, and we intend to keep it that way. Please make sure to pay your bill before you leave. This means you.

The main rule, although very loose is as follows:
B&P's may be called by any person on the NLUG list. The only request of the general group is that the B&P be held on any night but Wednesday. This is for two reasons. 1. NLUG general meetings are held on Wednesdays, and many people cannot make the meetings for X reasons, which leads us to two. 2. Many members have religious functions on Wednesday's that preclude them from attending. Usually, these people also miss the NLUG general meetings, so B&P is the only time they have to interact with the group. Therefore, it is in NLUG's best interest to call B&P's other days of the week.

The biggest successes of B&P's have come on Tuesdays and Thursdays, but in no means should this be considered a steadfast rule.

General consensus and past success also suggest getting together at 6pm during the week. This allows just enough time for people to come from work, but not enough time for them to get other food and think twice about coming. This also allows for more social time (rather than the previous 7pm time).

    5. Where?

Davinci's. 1812 Hayes Street. Nashville TN

    Directions:
From I-40W (via Broadway). Take I-40 to the Broadway Exit. Turn left onto Broadway. On Broadway, stay in the right lanes, as Broadway will split to form West End Ave (Veer to the right when you see the big billboard). Turn right onto 18th or 19th Ave, and then left or right accordingly on Hayes Street. (Davinci's is on the block between 18th and 19th). If you are by Baptist Hospital, you have gone too far. If you are by Jim Reed Chevy or Club Platinum, you have gone too far.

    6. Advice

You DO NOT need to be on time. We will make another seat at the table when you show up. Come.

Please try to bring cash whenever possible. This makes settling the bill easier.

15% gratuity is usually tacked on. Please plan accordingly.

Often, the bill is lumped into one big mess. (This would be the only downside of Davinci's). Again, please plan accordingly.

Check the list for follow ups to the time and date of the B&P. Often after the initial announcement is made the date is changed.

They have beer. They have pizza.

As the always stylin Rick Bradley suggested in this post:

Be there or be a l4m3r.*
    * Note: attendance does not guarantee removal of "l4m3r" attribute, ability to imbibe "B" nor afford "P", sympathy for aforementioned or other unmentioned or unmentionable conditions, and/nor bestowal upon attendee of attributes not previously possessed, human or superhuman, including but not solely limited to: sk1llz, punctuality, tolerance for alcohol, wit, sparkling conversation, smooth moves for the la-diiiiieeeessss, superhuman strength, or a fine-ass (or comparably superlative) ride.
